"As we bid German Chancellor Angela Merkel farewell on the conclusion of a successful visit, we no doubt were proud to host the leader of one of the most important countries in the world.

"Germany remains a global economic powerhouse. In Europe, it stands as a behemoth that plays a key role in devising EU economic programmes, and more important to us, it is also a leading voice in shaping policy towards Kenya and Africa (...).

"That Ms Merkel made Kenya one of her stops on the three-nation African tour — the others being oil-producing giants Nigeria and Angola — underlines the esteem in which this country is held (...).

"Separate meetings with President Kibaki, Prime Minister Raila Odinga, parliamentarians and other groups underlined the close relations and mutual respect the two countries enjoy, but there was one very strong lesson from the visit: that Kenya is a member of the international community.

"To that extent, there were reminders that the country must co-operate with the International Criminal Court in the ongoing proceedings against six suspects accused of masterminding the bloody post-election violence (...).

"That is the singular lesson of Chancellor Merkel’s visit".
